What: Hailed by Time as one of the “top ten film festivals for the rest of us” – meaning, guess, people who don’t go to Sundance and Cannes – Sidewalk turns 15 this year with a mix of indie cinema in downtown Birmingham. The documentary section features a small but choice selection of music films, among them, naturally, Muscle Shoals, about Alabama’s capital of soul, as well as The Girls in the Band, which chronicles unsung female jazz pioneers, and the intriguing, Alabama-made The Life, Love & Hate of a Free Jazz Man and His Woman, the story of aging avant-screech saxophonist Arthur Doyle and the toll of his lifelong pursuit of original sounds.
